Head's Word
Prof. Fu-Chun Zhang
The Physics Department has a strong commitment to both teaching and research excellence.
Our teaching programs are constantly reviewed to make sure that they fit the needs of students and society. The Department intends to train both physicists and non-physicists. For the majority of students, the Department aims to design courses to equip them with the basic scientific skills so they may succeed in modern-day high-value-added society. For those specially-gifted or highly-motivated students, the department prepares them for a career in research and teaching in physics or related areas. It is impossible to develop successful academic programs without inputs from students; therefore we treasure comments from students seriously. We encourage students communicate with our staff either face-to-face or via emails. They may also provide their views collectively through student-staff consultation committee.
The Department is committed to excellent research programs of the cutting edge. We focus our resources onto selected research areas to ensure an output of world-class research. We are fortunate to have many talented people among staff members who are extremely dedicated to their work in both teaching and research. Currently, the main research areas in the Department are the condense matter physics and astrophysics. With the recent funding from the University Development Fund, we have established a new center to dedicate for the research areas in theoretical and computational physics. We hope we will be able to further develop other important areas such as applied physics when new resources become available.
Finally, let me quote the words from our honorary professor, Dan Tsui, the 1997 Nobel Laureate in Physics.
"Physics is fun and the nice thing is you can get pay from it"
