Single Component Fermi Gas Near a P-wave Resonance

Abstract
 

Unconventional pairing between fermions, such as in Helium-3 and high-temperature superconductors has long attracted much attention. Recently, experiments on p-wave Fermi gases has been conducted in ultra-cold atomic assembles using the technique of Feshbach resonance. Feshbach resonance allows the study of not only weakly interacting regime but also that in the strongly interacting regime where scattering between particles are unitarily limited. As a result, traditional theory utilizing a small parameter is no longer possible and new techniques are developed. With a many-body trial wave function, lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method can be used to calculate the ground state energy even in the strongly interacting regime.

In this talk, I will first introduce the LOCV method and its adoption to the study of a single component Fermi gas near a p-wave resonance. With this method, we obtain the energy per particle for the ground state of a single component Fermi gas near a p-wave resonance. We also calculate the compressibility and identify a region where the system is not stable. At last, the two p-wave contacts are also calculated and compared with the experimental results.
