The underground laboratory in Aberdeen Tunnel is used for the study of cosmic ray and high energy particle physics.
The laboratory has an overburden of about 240m of rock and is now being used for the study of the flux and energy spectrum of cosmic muons and its interactions,
particularly the production of neutrons and other neutron emitting isotopes. The cosmic ray induced neutrons are detected by a neutron detector consisted of
Gd-doped liquid scintillator. The neutron detector is sandwiched between a muon tracker which signals the arrival of cosmic muons.
The muon tracker is comprised of 3 layers of crossed proportional counters and plastic scintillators.
This laboratory also serves as a satellite laboratory for the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment for measuring the neutrino mixing parameter θ13,
an international particle physics collaboration of over 200 scientists. |
