Research Activities

1. Radiation Protection and Environmental Radioactivity

Development of a plume dispersion model for use in the events of nuclear accident that may occur in the Daya Bay nuclear power plants, production of Hong Kong radon potential map, measurement of radon in air; measurement of radon and radium isotopes in underground water; radioactive waste management in Siu A Chau Low-Level Radioactive Wastes Facility.

2. Particle Physics

Participating in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment (http://dayabay.physics.hku.hk/ and http://dayawane.ihep.ac.cn/) in determining precisely the value of θ13, the mixing angle of electron anti-neutrinos emitted from the Daya Bay nuclear power plants. The experiment is a joint force of 38 institutions from China, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Russia, Taiwan and USA.

A small underground laboratory inside the Aberdeen Tunnel in Hong Kong is now being used for studying the production of neutrons from cosmic-ray muons. The results of our work have provided useful radiation background information for the Daya Bay Experiment.
