Excellence in Teaching & Research
Introduction
Besides commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, the staffs of the Physics Department are engaged in active research in many areas of physics. The department offers both M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs for full-time postgraduate students.
There are five major areas of researches that are being conducted in Physics Department. They are:
- Condensed matter theory and experiment;
- Materials science;
- Astrophysics;
- Health physics, environmental radioactivity and particle physics; and
- Quantum information and computing.
In condensed matter and related fields, our interests include superconductivity, spintronics, correlated electron systems, quantum transport in nanoscale, solid-state quantum computation, semiconductor and positron physics, and optics. In materials science, our research activities include surface science, functional thin films and heterostructures, nanomaterials and applications. In the field of astrophysics and astronomy, our research covers neutron stars, gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, cosmological models, supernovae, planetary nebulae, interstellar chemistry, and neutrino physics. In the area of health physics, environmental radioactivity and particle physics, we are the participants in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiments. We also engage in radioactive waste management in Hong Kong; mapping of radon potential in Hong Kong and study of ground water discharge in Tolo Harbour, for example. In the field of quantum information and computing, we seek to prove the security of various quantum cryptographic protocols as well as getting a better understanding of how to manipulate quantum information by quantum error-correction codes.
