Postdoctoral Fellow in Astrophysics in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited for appointment as Postdoctoral Fellows in Astrophysics in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 532416), to commence as soon as possible for 24 months, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and funding availability. Three positions are possible if suitable candidates can be identified.

 

The candidate is expected to have a PhD degree in astrophysics or related principles and will work with Prof. Bing Zhang to conduct research in astrophysics. Recent works of Prof. Zhang can be found at https://www.physics.unlv.edu/~bzhang/. Candidates with research experience and a strong publication record in the directions of multi-messenger astrophysics, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, and other branches of high-energy astrophysics are preferred. Both theorists and observers are welcome to apply. Applicants who are in the process of completing a Ph.D. degree will also be considered. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

We are looking for an Executive Assistant to join the Department of Physics. 

 

The Role

The appointee will provide administrative and logistical support for a Research Institute in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Duties include, but not limited to, managing the daily operations of the Institute, organizing academic activities such as workshops and meetings, assisting with the logistics of hosting visitors who give colloquia, seminars, or mini-courses, maintaining website content, coordinating the Director’s daily schedule and travel itineraries, and managing accounting tasks related to the Institute. The appointee will also perform any other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Qualities

  • A Bachelor’s degree;
  • 2 to 5 years’ secretarial or administrative experience;
  • A good command of spoken and written English and Chinese (including Putonghua); 
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving and communication skills;
  • Strong IT skills (including MS office and basic webpage editing); and
  • A good team player, be self-motivated with a strong sense of responsibility and the ability to multitask. 

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a written test and an interview.

 

What We Offer

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellows in all-optical ultracold atom-ion hybrid experiments inside a multimode confocal cavity in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 530808), to commence as soon as possible for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

 

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Physics or relevant areas. Those with experience in atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) experiments are welcome to apply. The appointees will work with Prof. Zhendong Zhang to pursue research in all-optical trapping and manipulation of ultracold ions and atoms enabled by synthetic micro-optical modes inside a multimode cavity. Prof. Zhang’s research interests cover topics in AMO physics, including quantum simulation of strongly correlated physics, ultracold chemistry and precision measurements.
