Abstract

Over the past few decades, scientists have demonstrated versatile ability of trapped ion and laser-cooled atoms experimental platforms in quantum simulation. In our lab, we aim to build a next-generation system of ultracold ion-atom hybrid to open new paradigm of sub-Doppler cooling regime physics. We are planning a step-by-step approach to first build optical ionizing and RF trapping system based on a MOT of Ytterbium, following which we will try to demonstrate optical trapping of ion. With a high-NA quantum gas microscope, we can study the exotic features of ion interacting with cold atomic cloud. One of the new fields can be ultracold impurity physics. One can examine the spectroscopy conveying the spectrum and motion information of atoms and ions, making possible a deeper dive into the interactions between ion and atoms can possibly unravel the rich mechanism behind the scenes, such as quantized atomic population hopping of ion core Fermi Polaron, resonant scattering channels induced by Landau levels and Coulomb interaction induced nuclear spin exchange Kondo physics.
