Dr. D.W. Zhai
Research Assistant Professor
B.Sc. BIT; Ph.D. OU
Introduction

Dr. Dawei Zhai received a bachelor’s degree in applied physics from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) in 2012, and a PhD degree in condensed matter theory from Ohio University (OU) in 2018. He joined the physics department at HKU in 2019.

Research Interests

Dr Zhai is interested in the electronic, topological, transport, optical, and mechanical properties of various 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, etc. His recent focus is on superlattice structures, for instance, moiré lattice formed by twisting two layers of 2D materials, or periodically strained 2D materials. Interesting physics can emerge due to the spatially periodic landscapes in these superlattices, including flat bands and correlation-driven phenomena, topological physics, real-space Berry phases effects, chirality-related transport phenomena, moiré exciton, etc.
